Professional Experience

Volunteer Ireland

Public Affairs Officer (fixed term contract)  

12/2018 - 11/2019

  • Advocacy and lobbying to advance strategic policy objectives, including producing annual Budget submission to Government.

  • Representing Volunteer Ireland in policy development forums and parliamentary processes.

  • Designing and implementing the organization’s first advocacy and government relations strategy.

  • Researching and developing the organisations policy positions for submissions to government; advocacy campaigns; and local, national, and European elections.

  • Tracking impact and advocacy against strategic goals.

  • Managing lobbying returns as per the Regulation of Lobbying Act 2015.

  • Project managing Volunteer Ireland’s strategic response to the first National Volunteering Strategy.

  • Working with European partners to advance volunteering at EU level.

  • As a result of these efforts Volunteer Ireland secure two seats on the Department of Rural and Community Development's strategy implementation body, and an overall increase of 40% in funding to the sector.

  • Conducted extensive research, and produced a wide range of  parliamentary materials (briefing materials, legal analysis, speeches, motions, amendments etc.) and tracking of domestic, European and International developments on policy and legislation relevant to the member of parliament’s work.

  • Identifying and developing new policy areas.

  • Networking and relationship building across statutory and non-statutory agencies and the community and voluntary sector.

  • Representing the party leadership at meetings and functions.

  • Designing, managing and executing the party leader’s communications strategy.

  • Managing and supervising staff and interns.

  • Successfully developed a coalition of parliamentary partners to amend the Data Protection Act 2018 to make the processing of the personal data of a child for the purposes of direct marketing, profiling, or micro-targeting an offence.

  • Advised general election candidates and party branches on policy issues and their campaigns, and monitored their compliance with ethics and electoral regulations ensuring they were followed at all times.

  • Conducting constituency analysis using large scale datasets.

  • Recruited, advised and developed a number of community activists throughout the country to establish branches in their area, growing the membership to over 1,000 members.

  • Produced internal party and membership communications, social media content, candidate policy briefings, newsletters, update videos and general election material.

  • Administered the establishment of the party, project managed all internal projects, monitored progress, and reported to leadership.
